Success Story: SAGE Senior's Safe House
Elder Abuse is any action or inaction that jeopardizes the health or well-being of an older person.
Over the past few years your REALTORS® Community Foundation was very proud to have supported SAGE (The Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton).
The mandate of SAGE is to build and maintain programs and services that enhance the quality of life for seniors. The Safe House at SAGE provides temporary accommodations for men and women 60 years of age and older who require a safe haven from an abusive situation.
Elder Abuse may include physical, financial, sexual, emotional/psychological, neglect, and over or under medicating. 7% of older Canadians have experienced some sort of abuse and in Edmonton this means over 6000 seniors are being abused.
The SAGE Safe House provides emotional support, a furnished suite for up to 60 days, connections to community resources and professional case management support. More than 90% of the clients who attended the Seniors’ Safe House reduced or eliminated abuse in their lives.
"The greatest of your gifts is that you showed me that you cared, and reminded me that there are good people in the world who do care, and that lifted my heart and gave me hope." From a Safe House Resident in a thank note to the staff
